Does anyone else reline their own atv brakes? I've relined my last 3 sets of rear brakes on my z400. By far the best brakes i ever had. And, i can get a foot of brake material from www.mcmaster-carr.com for 5 bucks plus shipping. this will do the 3 sets i talked about.

First i clean off the metal backing of the old set of brakes.

Then i take the brake metal backing and trace it out on the material, then cut it out.

Next, I mix up some jb weld, and put it on the backing. Place the material that you just cut on the backing/jbweld, and get it set in place where you want it.

Put the 2 sides (material facing each other) in a vice and tighten down.

Let them sit for roughly a day to set up.

After this, i take them out of the vice and clean up the overhanging material with the bench grinder.

woolah, 3 sets of brakes for a fraction of what you would pay for 1 set.

This is interesting, which brake material are you using... semi-metallic woven? So the JB weld holds up then?

what are using to clean the steel backing and what do you cut the friction material with? Great tip, thanks for sharing

davey i use the semi metallic strips. i get the 1 1/2 inch width 3/16th strips. here's what i use with the part number for you"
6224K117 SEMIMETALLIC WOVEN BRAKE AND CLUTCH LINING,
3/16" THICKNESS, 1−1/2" WIDTH, 1' LENGTH

rudz, i just get the leftover material off with the bench grinder wire wheel. and i cut the material with a hacksaw.

i have yet to have the jbweld not hold. i read an article online when i was thinking of doing this where the guy relined his own brakes the same way for his croth rocket and he said he got up to 100mph and got on the brakes to see if they would hold and they did. so i figured if his will hold at 100, they should be fine doing max 50-60 on a quad.

im going to be ordering some more here soon. when i do i'll take pics of how i make up a set

first step take ur brakes off and clean all the old brake material off.



then i trace out the metal onto the new brake material and cut it as close as i can





next mix up some jbweld and apply it to the metal



next i put them in a vise and let it sit for about 12 hours.



after this, i will trim up the material on the bench grinder.

Same process for Drum brake shoes? Im thinking cutting a curved piece of wood for the vise!

never did drum brakes.

I'll have to poke around and see what I can find out. Ill definitely use that for the Discs though!
