Recently i have heard about some kids under the age of 12 hunting. They are hunting through the mentor program, but i would like to hear your opinion on this topic.

I dont have any problem with it ...'as long as it is done properly'

I think that some kids will only really get the itch to hunt if they can really be completely involved in a positive way...

A mentor hunt is just that... A mentor sits there and basically sets everything up for the youth, and allows them control only when everything is safe and ready to pull the trigger...

The exact opposite of yours. I think there is an age limit for a reason. Also the hunters safety course is there for a reason. And many more reasons.

But also any hunting should follow the rules

I agree the hunters safety course is there for a reason...

That is why the mentor is required to take it, they after all is responsible for carrying the gun, identifying the target and safety surrounding the circumstance, and allowing the shot to go down range...

The problem I have is with the people who take out a youth hunter, and do not pay attention to what they are doing, allowing them to control their actions, and the weapon.

I've never hunted ever!! If my son needs a mentor to hunt with should I take him? Alot of people let there ego get in the way of making good judgement calls right out of the starting gate. I know how to set up an ambush, I know how to volley fire, I know how to move the selector from semi, to 3 round burst, I know how to stay in my sectors, I know how to identify my target, and I know how to take aim. My only problem is my targets where supposed to be people! LOL!!! I think I need somebody else to mentor my son! LOL!!! Besides I don't think they allow us in PA to use asultrifles for hunting. BUMMER!!

yeah not all mentors take control. but that is the same person in that case. Do you hunt Trail ranger.

Yes I do hunt, I have hunted since I was of legal age...

This however is the first 'first day' I have ever missed...

I have been doing a great deal of Crow Hunting in the last few years, and get tons of enjoyment from it.

I have been eating deer meat since I was very young, and basically burnt out on eating deer meat...

Tired of some times it is great, and sometimes it is dry and gamey...

And I dont like to shoot deer unless I am going to eat them...

I didnt get a doe license this year, and will only hunt buck for the fun and enjoyment of hunting with friends and family.

Chris... When you need some one to take him... Find someone who is a very responsible and a very experienced hunter...

I like the mentored youth program. I did it with my youngest and he loved it. All my children have been shooting since they where 4 years old. I started them at a young age so as to teach respect for fire arms. I feel the same with hunting, start young and teach them respect for the Game hunted and the laws that are in place to protect the wildlife.
