Fellow ATV'ers and RZR riders:

2009 rzr 800 standard, doesn't respond to full throttle - slow to get up to speed. Poor throttle response and loss of power on hills. Recently ran around with three other rzr's and some hills I couldn't get up that they went up easily. Also couldn't keep up with them on the trails. On long straight always I eventually get it up to 55mph. Some backfiring.

A few months ago I cleaned the air cleaner housing, throttle body, replaced plugs even though the plugs seemed fine (not a lot of carbon), replaced air filter, changed oil, greased all zerks while I was at it, drained all the gas and filled up with fresh. Didn't change anything, and again on the trail today (to see how it ran in real life situation) it still ran very poorly.

Two questions - any idea what else I can try, and can anyone recommend a good rzr mechanic? There is a dealer close to me in Murrysville (withholding name) that is really expensive for service. Looking for another alternative if I am at the end of my skill level and need an expert to look at it.

Couple of things to check Tim
1. Check you fuel pump. Should be 39 + or - 2 psi
2. Check your throttle free play to make sure your getting full throttle
3. Pull your air filter and get light and look inside your throttle body to see if it's clean.
4. check your belt and clutches

Shoot me a PM if you need to.

Thanks Gary.

I did a few web searches in the meantime, and keep coming up with TPS adjustment for my symptoms. That sound like a possibility to you in addition to the other things you mentioned?

I neglected to mention that i did check throttle adjustment - it was good but adjusted a little bit anyway in order to get that instant jump.

I have the service manual on disc, so I'll check how to determine the fuel pressure, and probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the belt anyway. I think it is original, and it has 1900 miles on it so it wouldn't be a bad thing to replace it anyway.

Thanks again

TPS could be the culprit, are you getting a code 51 I believe is what it is.
I'd still lean towards fuel pump. Back fire and loss of power are good signs. If you do need one don't spend a fortune on a polaris pump. I'll get you the part number for a pump at the auto store for a 1/4 the price.

Airtex E8335 any local auto parts store should have one

OK you were right, pressure from fuel pump is 25. You did mention a replacement pump available from Pep-boys or one of the other automotive stores, so thank you for that. Question though: I tried removing the pump and got 6 of the 8 screws out very easily. There are 2 screws side by side that will not come out, they just spin around. I tried lifting up the pump housing with a slotted screwdriver while turning at the same time - no luck. Is it just stubborn? I don't want to be overly aggressive with it an risk ruining the fuel tank.

The screws seem to be stripped, but yet they are tight. When trying to remove them the screw heads turn but don't back out at all. They just turn and turn and turn. And they are not loose enough to pry up and out, in fact they are not loose at all. Weird.

Hey Tim. There are 6 screws that hold the pump in. Try to tilt it from the passenger side towards the drivers side. Make sure you don't damage the float or pick up screen.

OK, got the new fuel pump and installed it into the tube housing. I have a yellowish bushing left over, did not see where it came from and don't know where it goes. Attaching two pictures, the new pump assembled into the housing with the old pump at the bottom of the picture, and a second picture showing the bushing that is looking for a home.

Is it possible it came off the new fuel pump? I know alot of times they come with parts that you don't need.

If your sure it came from the rzr then someone will chime in.

It looks like removed it but make sure you remove the caps and stuff they have on the fuel pumps. When I replaced the pump in my saab I didn't realize I was suppose to remove the cap thing on the intake side of the pump. That sucked.
