What does everyone do to keep warm when riding their ATV / UTV's in the snow, or cold?

I never rode much in the winter, but I cant imagine my riding boots, pants, etc. being warm enough to ride in the cold...

The pants I could layer under some what, but the boots ???

Or do you guys abandon the whole riding gear thing in the winter and wear overalls, ski jackets, etc?

Wondering what to expect...

I just dress warm and a pair sweat pants under oversized jeans. I wear boots a few layers (t-shirt sweatshirt sweater)then a jacket.

The key is not to get wet. Stay away from mud holes and thin ice. I find that as long as I stay dry I am happy.

As posted in another thread I am thinking about a snowmobile helmet.

Do you wear you riding boots?

I cannot imagine them being too darn warm...

I would think all of the plastic would transfer the cold pretty easily...

But my thicker boots would not allow me much room if any to shift...

Hmmm... Better take a Rhino in the winter... :-)

i usually wear a pair of jogging pants, snow pants, a sweatshirt and a coat. sometimes i wear a facemask, but i don't think i'll be able to wear one with the new helmet. don't think my mellon will fit. sometimes i wear my streetbike helmet with the shield, but it sucks when it fogs up.

Sounds to me that we should start a new fad... Polar Bear ride. nothing on but a pair of shorts.. quad

But for real it's coveralls, coat,Hunting boots and something around my neck. My chin and neck are the only thing that gets cold. Maybe sometimes my hands..

From my biker days , I can tell ya it's ALL about keeping the wind out . Gauntlet style gloves , balaclava for your face & neck , windproof coat & pants . If you don't have heated grips , get ski style or hunting gloves that have that little pocket built in to insert those chemical handwarmers .
Also , don't forget about those ATV Cacoons that they show on Fishers ATV World .

Me ? T-shirt , hikers and jeans.... enclosed cab stays about 65 degrees...... rofl

Hope this helps ...... quad... thumbs

I wear thermo quilted long jon bottoms, with jeans overtop and a camo thin waterrepellent over them. Good gortex thinsulate boots, several layers shirts including a hooded quilted , and my woolrich coat. good gloves, and a good ski mask under the helmet. regular googles.

All these clothes also come in handy if you happen to fall off your quad shock

Balaclava for my neck and head, Carheart insulated bibs, thermo top, long sleeve t-shirt, inner jacket liner, a rian coat to break the wind and keep me dry, wool socks, Danner Ft.Lewis boots or Carolina goretex logger boots, and Fly water proof insulated gloves.

Start with polypropylene socks, long johns and shirt. Wool socks and good boots. I like thermal lined pants and a pair of water proof bibs. On top I'll add a cotton turtle neck, flannel shirt and a snow mobile coat. Add a polypropylene hood and a full face helmet with a heated visor. I also wear a pair of water proof mittens over a pair of wool gloves. Instant heat packs in your boots and gloves help if it is really cold. The key is layers that you can add or remove to adjust to the conditions.

Just a thought for those that have warm clothes , but no waterproof outerwear and are on a budget . We use thin coveralls at the Mill when working in dirty / greasy conditions . I believe you could find them near paint supplies at hardwear stores. They feel and look like paper , but are tougher to tear . But , always go a size or two larger to allow for movement and extra clothing thumbs

i bought my wife and i jackets from here http://www.jrgraham.com/browse.do?action=expand_category&exp_ctg_id=7107311
last year. they are waterproof, windproof and good to -30!
i wear underarmour base layer, jeans and Carhart insulated bibs on the bottom half. up top its the underarmour base layer, t-shirt, flannel shirt and the Katahdin jacket.
i've tried several balaclava's and my favorite is the Serius combo fleece http://www.snowshack.com/detail/SNW+SI-03448+L_Seirus+Innovation+Seirus+Neofleece+Combo+Scarf+Black
it keeps your neck and lower face warm and dry, without making your helmet squeeze your head!
for footwear, it's Rocky Blizzard Tracker boots, a pair of regular socks and a pair of thermal socks.
Both Grizzlies are outfitted with Symtec grip and thumbwarmers http://www.symtec-inc.com/Complete-ATV-H...OLLER_p_75.html
and Moose MUD paws http://www.mooseutilities.com/products.jsp?level1=972&product_group_id=2607
then to top it off, a good pair of heavy winter gloves

I wear Muck brand boots Wetland model rated to 20 below, and they work and waterproof, I have hand warrmer, thumb warmer and seat warmer installed on my Grizzly, I have a baclavia if the wind is brutal. I had a pair of googles with a electric fan in them so they wouldnt get fogged up, they worked great till I got them wet.

Whenever I go out riding I dress the same way I do when I go snowboarding.

Thermal long johns, then either thin or thicker sweatpants, then my snowboard riding pants. I also have a old pair of snowboarding boots and wear them also and their super warm. My snowboarding jacket which is wind proof and water proof, a bacalav.
What is really nice about skiing and snowbarding jackets and pants is that if you do get hot or it warms up there are venting zippers that you can open a little or a lot. Also, there are tons of pockets.

My 2 cents...

I have used retired ski wear for riding in the winter but I had found a nice deal for a 1 piece snowmobile suit in the Sportsman Guide and grabbed that. Toasty warm!

Heated grips are a big plus too.

I wearlong johns, warm socks, good boots, tshirt, sweat shirt, andmy Carharts.Ihave the bibs, soI add a Kohls 69 dollar 2 in one jacket with both layers.Ihave a pair of"Claw" snowmobile glovesthat are just awesome. Thumb hole, and then 2 fingers in each finger hole. I can even use the clutch on the 350x with them, and they are warm. I used to wear a mask but got a snowmobile helmet for Christmas last year, and I love that thing. I find myself venting due to overheating.

My buddy has FOX riding boots, and he wore them last Feb when we took our 350x's out to Beaver Meadows and he said he was warm. It was -2 up there. We were the only ones in the snow, and the first on the trails since it had snowed, it was an awesome day.

Cotton KILLS! To stay warm in the cold and wet days wear something that can dry out fast. A few weeks ago I was out on a wet and cold ride or other guys though it was cold but I was fine since I had on a fleece jacket with a rain jacket over it and my paints were semi water proof but they we nylon so they didn't hold any water. I've tried carhartt bibs and jacket but the water allways gets through. Last winter I used a good rain jacket and rain pants (not the plastic crap you get from walmart). But I had fleece under them and my body was warm but stupid me wore steal toe boots so my toes got cold, for the gloves I had gortex gloves that stayed dry but since my hands were moving around too much my fingers got a little cold. Allways dress in layers its much easier to take things off than try to find things to put on.

I think I want to try the carhartt pvc bibs over the regular bibs and that should keep me warm and dry. Anyone have any luck with rewater proofing the carhartt bibs or jackets? I used the nikwax cotton proof and some spots weren't water proof but some where. so i'm going to try it again this year and hopefully I can get them water proof again.

This was a cold ride. 17 degrees at night and 34 in the day. I wore thick wool riding socks riding boots, thermal pants then riding pants and waterproof pants over them. T shirt, long sleeve shirt an old columbia jacket and a thin waterproof jacket over it.Winter gloves and I wore a balaclava but heard a rz mask is very good at retaining heat and protecting your face.

Depending on how serious you want to get there is heated riding gear available. http://gerbing.com

That looks awesome. Last Feb we went out it was about 1 degree, and we had a blast. We were the only odiots out there, it had just snowed and it was like a private winter wonderland for us. I love that stuff. Layers layers layers!! That all I can say. Plus a nice Snowmobile Helmet doesnt hurt. I got one of them for Christmas last year and it rocks!!

The first ANF snow ride i went to in 2004, never made it past 3 degree. lots of snow too, all the sports played around the parking lot that day, couldn't even make it out of the warm up loop.

We wear insulated bibs, coats and Rocky Winter Stalker boots.

Just make the wife test 'em out first! thumbs
