if you want a little more bottom end and aren't concerned about top end, consider clutch work. even the addition of a 1mm shim will boost bottom end pretty well


Hammer, ordered shims today. is 1mm enough or should I just go for the gusto and add 1.5mm? I still have the stock tires on it. Yes, steering is light, but, I can't see it pulling the front wheels off (maybe its the winch, plow hookup/skid plate and those heavy gun racks).

the shim is pretty easy to add, maybe try the 1mm and see how you like it?
or just go for it! hehe neither thickness is going to make a HUGE difference, but both will make a noticeable difference

shim mod done (1.5mm). I have to say it made a very noticeable difference. thumbs It didn't cure the stumble when nailing the throttle from a stop (that seems like a timing issue), but once caught, it pulls much better now.

I'd have to say, it's way more fun to ride now. rockin

DD, where did you get the shim from? Easy to install? Does it effect to top end speed? Now that my riding buddy has a Outlander 650, I can't afford to give up any speed, lol!!

only dealer in area that has them in stock is camp hill (717 761 6192). you can get them online as well (cheapcycle, fleabay etc.)

Yamaha PN:
90201-222FO-00 (0.5mm shim)
90201-225A4-00 (1.0mm shim)

the pn's are used for snowmobiles and watercraft mostly. I've heard that some use them on the jetski for towing skiers...better hole shot.

easy to do (only hard thing is to get the primary locked down enough to torque to 100 ftlbs)... use a strap. You will loose some top end. Not sure how much, but I would guess about 5mph (in low and high range). That's what I've read thus far. Not sure if you're gonna whip a 650 canned ham.

If you're going to do it, let me know and I'll send ya a link on "how to".

I'm kinda on the fence. After riding Hatfield last week, I find riding in low range about perfect for the speeds we go. If I lose some of that speed, I'm wondering if high will still be too high and low will now be too low?

I know I have no chance of beating the 'Am since he's got double the HP I do. Just trying to keep his dust in sight...

well, if you decide to try it, here is a good link. http://www.grizzlycentral.com/forum/grizzly-engine-transmission/23005-how-do-shim-mod.html It very easy to do, so, if you don't like the results, just undo.

same mod (different part nos) works on King quads too.

Surprised that there is that much technical stuff requiring low range at HM. I really only use low for extreme rock crawling....or are you just a little gun shy now after having your rebuild? I suppose I don't blame you, but it sounds like your issue was too much junk in the...well..., throat?
