Does anyone here ride with younger kids on public trails? My 2 older kids are 9 and 7, and I'm trying to figure out how I can get them going. I've read that at 8, you can operate an ATV on public trails, but only if the size is limited to 70cc or less. My 9yo is a little too tall to fit properly on the 70cc I looked at(Can Am DS70), and from what I can find, these max out at about 10mph, which really won't work too well to ride along with us.

The DS 90 would fit her, but that is apparently illegal for public riding. I considered maybe I just buy them a couple of small dirt bikes, and let them ride those until they're big enough for a 250cc range ATV? Both of them race BMX, just on pedal and not motor, but they're used to the concept at least.

Anyone have kids coming through these ages that can offer advice on what you did with them?

Someone else will have to help with machine sizes but I can add that you need to have them complete a Safety Course to be allowed to ride off of your property.

From the PA DCNR website:

Quote:
Safety Training Requirement for Youth Riders

No one under 8 years of age is allowed to operate an ATV on any state-owned property. ATV riders ages 8 to 15 must complete a prescribed ATV safety training course and receive an ATV training certificate to ride on lands other than their parents’ or guardian’s property.

Safety training classes are given by trained volunteer instructors. All youth ages 8 to 15 who complete the course will receive a safety course certificate. For information about a safety instructor near you see the list of youth ATV safety instructors by county or contact DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry at 717-783-7941.

Hope you get your questions answered. Possibly the Safety Instructor can guide you in the right direction.

Yea, I know I need to run them through the ATV safety course. Just hoping someone was around that has kids riding and could share how they got them going on machines at a younger age. There's a lot of conflicting red tape on things at that age, to the point that I am really just considering getting the kids a couple of dirt bikes, which for some reason you're allowed to tear around on with almost zero oversight compared to an ATV.

I have seen SSRT's sponsors offer kids safety courses posted on their website. Not really sure how much DCNR enforces the CC rule as it is kinda dumb.

Dirt bikes are not allowed on state trails, they are more limited as far as legal riding goes.

check out clubs, they do not require safety course although they do recommend them. They also allow the parent to determine the size of machine that youths ride. clubs that are in your area. Tri-County and ICV ATV Club . Check their web sites.

I should have thought of the club sites. I think I may look into Tri County. I've been looking to ride in some new places and they're only an hour or so from me. Thanks!
