Fatal ATV Crash in Washington County

AMWELL TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- State Police are looking into a deadly ATV crash in Amwell Township, Washington County.

Police say a 13-year-old and 16-year-old boy were riding the Yamaha Wolverine 4×4 around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday.

They were headed south on Shipe Run Road when the ATV went off the road and hit a tree stump. That caused the ATV to lose control and strike several other trees along the road.

Both boys were thrown from the ATV.

Police say 13-year-old Anthony Maffio was taken to a Washington hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The 16-year-old was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, no word on his condition.

Both riders were not wearing helmets or protective gear at the time of the crash.

State Police are investigating.

Ugh. That's awful.

So close to home. That is rough. No helmets or gear the poor kids probably never even completed a safety course. Just a sad day for the ATV world.

Im sorry to have to hear this.

I will say these kids see grown adults riding motorcycles everyday with NO HELMETS. Just like cigs and alcohol, they are bombarded with advertising showing how cool it can be....what a shame!
